Although there’s no single law in the U.S. that covers privacy, there are several laws in place that address specific types of data along with consumer privacy state laws in California, Colorado, Virginia and other states. Here’s more on that if you want to dive in.

Even if you determine that existing federal and state laws don’t apply to you, it’s a good idea to consult an attorney and determine if you need to have a privacy policy on your site.

Remember that privacy policy laws often apply to the state where the website visitor lives, rather than where your business is located. And since someone residing in another state can access your website and submit information, you probably want to have a privacy policy in place.

Often, you will be asked to display a privacy policy when you use third-party tools and services, for example, Google Business Messenger.

What should be included in my agency’s privacy policy?

Generally, your privacy policy will cover the types of information you collect from your website visitors, how you use and share that information, and how you keep that information safe.

Where do I start?

A quick search for privacy policy resources online will give you a great place to start if you don’t have an attorney who can help.

There are many privacy policy generators that can come up with a policy for your business for a fee.

You can also find privacy policies that are available under creative commons attribution share-alike license at no cost.
